Module 1: Literature & Materials
Using Materials Effectively
Maximizing the Impact of DAP Materials
Having materials is only the first step—using them effectively determines whether your message gets through. This lesson covers strategies for getting the most from your DAP resources.
Preparation
Before Each Presentation
- Review the materials you plan to use
- Practice any activities or demonstrations
- Count materials to ensure you have enough
- Organize materials for easy access during presentation
Know Your Audience
- Confirm grade level and class size
- Ask about any special considerations
- Select appropriate materials for the group
During Presentations
Distribution Strategies
- Pass out materials at the right moment—not too early
- Have students wait to look until you direct them
- Use materials as teaching tools, not just handouts
- Walk through activities together rather than leaving students on their own
Engagement Techniques
- Ask questions related to the materials
- Have students share their work
- Connect material activities to the key messages
- Praise participation and effort
Leaving Materials Behind
For Teachers
- Provide extra copies for absent students
- Leave teacher guides if available
- Suggest follow-up activities
- Offer to return for follow-up if helpful
For Display
- Posters for classroom or hallway
- Pledge cards for bulletin boards
- Ask where materials would be most visible
Tracking Material Use
- Note what materials you used at each presentation
- Record quantities distributed for CLMS reporting
- Note which materials worked well
- Identify materials that need restocking
Getting Feedback
Materials improve with input:
- Ask teachers which materials students responded to best
- Note your own observations about effectiveness
- Share feedback with your State Chair
- Suggest improvements through proper channels
