Module 4: Transition Planning

Once a Chair, Always a Chair

Continuing Your DAP Impact

"Once a Chair, Always a Chair" reflects a core DAP philosophy: your expertise and passion don't disappear when your term ends. Former State Chairs are a valuable resource for the program, and you can continue contributing in meaningful ways.

The Value of Experience

As a former State Chair, you bring:

  • Institutional memory: Knowledge of what's been tried and what works
  • Relationships: Connections with schools, partners, and DAP volunteers
  • Skills: Leadership, organization, and program management capabilities
  • Perspective: Understanding of the big picture and long-term trends
  • Credibility: Respect earned through your service

Ways to Stay Involved

Mentor New Leaders

Your successor and future chairs can benefit from your guidance. Be available for questions and advice—but let them lead.

Serve on State DAP Committee

Many states have advisory committees where past chairs contribute to planning and special projects.

Continue as a Presenter

Your presentation skills don't expire. Stay active delivering school programs if you enjoy it.

Manage Special Projects

Take on specific initiatives: contest coordination, training development, or special events.

Represent DAP Regionally or Nationally

Participate in national convention, regional meetings, or national DAP initiatives.

Return to Lodge-Level Service

Your experience makes you especially effective as a Lodge or District Chair.

Supporting Your Successor

The most valuable thing you can do is help the new State Chair succeed:

  • Respond promptly when they have questions
  • Share relevant information proactively
  • Advocate for resources and support on their behalf
  • Speak positively about them to others
  • Give honest feedback privately when asked

What to Avoid

Former chairs can sometimes hinder more than help:

  • Don't undermine: Avoid criticizing decisions publicly
  • Don't hover: Give space to lead differently than you did
  • Don't cling to control: Transfer authority fully
  • Don't disappear completely: Remain available and engaged

Building the "Once a Chair" Network

Connect with other former State Chairs:

  • Share experiences and best practices
  • Support each other's continued involvement
  • Advocate collectively for DAP resources
  • Mentor the next generation of leaders together

The network of experienced DAP leaders is one of the program's greatest assets.

Your Legacy

Your impact as State Chair extends beyond your term through:

  • Leaders you developed who continue serving
  • Programs and partnerships you established
  • Systems and processes you improved
  • Young people you helped protect from drugs

That impact continues whether or not you remain visibly active in DAP.
