Module 3: Presentation Techniques

Using DAP Materials Effectively

Making the Most of DAP Resources

The Elks have developed a wealth of materials to support your presentations. Knowing what's available and how to use it effectively will enhance your impact and reduce your preparation burden.

Elroy the Elk

Elroy is DAP's beloved mascot and one of your most powerful tools for elementary presentations:

  • Puppet presentations: An Elroy puppet can deliver messages in ways that feel less threatening to young children.
  • Books and materials: Elroy-themed coloring books and activity sheets give students something to take home.
  • Photo opportunities: If you have an Elroy costume, schools often appreciate photo opportunities for their newsletters.

Note: Elroy works best with K-5 students. By middle school, students may see mascots as "babyish," so use your judgment.

What Heroes Do Program

The "What Heroes Do" curriculum includes:

  • Lesson guides for different grade levels
  • Discussion questions and activities
  • Take-home materials for families
  • Connections to Red Ribbon Week themes

These structured programs take the guesswork out of planning your presentation. Follow the guide while adding your personal touch.

Printed Materials

Available through Choice Printing (DAP's printing partner):

  • Brochures: Age-appropriate information sheets for students to take home
  • Posters: Classroom displays reinforcing drug-free messages
  • Stickers and prizes: Small incentives for participation
  • Red Ribbon Week supplies: Ribbons, bracelets, and pledge cards

Always leave materials with the teacher to reinforce messages after you leave. Order materials well in advance—allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

Digital Resources

Available on DAP websites:

  • Training videos: Watch how experienced presenters deliver content
  • Presentation slides: Customizable PowerPoints for different age groups
  • Statistics and facts: Current data to incorporate into your presentations
  • Activity guides: Ideas for interactive elements

DEA Partnership Resources

Through DAP's partnership with the DEA:

  • Just Think Twice: Teen-focused website with age-appropriate content
  • Get Smart About Drugs: Resources for parents and educators
  • Red Ribbon materials: Official Red Ribbon Week promotional content
  • Current drug trends: Up-to-date information on emerging substance threats

Tips for Using Materials

  • Preview everything: Review all materials before using them in a presentation.
  • Know your audience: Select materials appropriate for the specific age group.
  • Less is more: Don't overwhelm students with too many handouts. One meaningful takeaway is better than a pile of papers.
  • Connect to your message: Materials should support your presentation, not replace it.
  • Personalize when possible: Add your own examples and local references to make materials more relevant.
  • Check dates: Make sure statistics and information in materials are current.

Ordering Materials

Work with your State or District Chair to order materials. They can help you:

  • Determine what's available and appropriate
  • Place orders with the correct quantities
  • Access any state-specific materials
  • Coordinate for larger events like Red Ribbon Week
